1390856 Measuring length of tape loop BUCODE Inc 4 July 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 43306/74 Divided out of 1390855 Heading G1A [Also in Division G3] A tape transport system includes apparatus for sensing the length of a tape loop 61 or 62 in a tape storage column 66 or 68 comprising light directing means 98 for directing light across the width of the tape storage column along the entire length of the tape storage column; a bar 84 for collecting the light received from the directing means and internally reflecting the light towards the ends of the bar; first and second photo-sensitive devices each being positioned at one of the ends of the bar for receiving the light collected and reflected by the bar, the boundaries of the tape storage being formed by the light directing means and the bar, said bar including means for providing a linear output from the photo-sensitive devices which is directly proportional to the linear position of the tape in the tape storage column. The bar may be an optical element of the type of Specification 1390855.
