Abstract

1390397 Digital computers; decision trees INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 4 Aug 1972 [23 Aug 1971] 36455/72 Heading G4A A digital computer, including a display unit, is programmed to generate and display a decision tree to assign probabilities and expected values to selected branches in response to input data, to modify the tree in response to operator selection of branches, and to calculate modified probabilities and expected values for the selected branches. Problems are stated in decision tree format and the decision maker provides probabilities for chance events, terminal values and points on a preference curve. The computer makes choices at decision modes on the basis of maximization of expected value or utility and displays both the expectation of of the project and the decision path. Automated sensitivity analysis is provided to determine those probabilities lying on the decision path which are most senstive in changing either that path or the expectation. In addition, the effects of varying the probability of any selected branch may be determined. Instructions appear on the display (a CRT) and the users response is by selecting an alternative program with a light pen or by typing a numeral. A probelm involving drilling of an oil well is discussed in detail.
