Abstract
1390352 Titania TETRONICS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 7 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971 (2) 18 Aug 1971] 44263/74 44264/74 and 44265/74 Divided out of 1390351 Heading C1N [Also in Divisions H5 and C7] A process for treating particulate material to effect physical and/or chemical changes thereof comprise forming an expanded arc column as defined in the divisional Specification 1,390,353 and feeding said particulate material into the upper part of the expanded arc column. Furnaces using this process are described within the Specification and claimed in the parent Specification 1,390,351. The material may be introduced as a cylindrical curtain. Processes disclosed include treatment of particulate metalbearing material to recover the metal which treatment may include the addition of a reductant with the particulate material, e.g. hydrogen. Carbon-bearing materials may be fed with the particulate material and hydrocarbon may be injected via the stationary electrode of the system. Specific examples are the extraction of aluminium, titania, zirconia and copper from alumina-containing materials, titaniferous ore, zirconium silicate containing-materials, and copper sulphide ore respectively. In the case of zirconium a sodium compound may be introduced into the expanded discharge. Communication with simultaneous spheroidization and refining may be carried out, e.g. of metal powders. Examples using nickel or iron flake are given.
