Abstract
1389851 Polymer-blends XEROX CORP 25 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3399/72 Headings C3P and C3G [Also in Division G2] An organic photoconductive composition comprises a photoconductive organic polymer and an elastomer, the elastomer being present as a dispersion of discrete particles in a continuous photoconductive polymer phase. The photoconductive polymer may be polyvinyl carbazole, derivatives thereof, polyvinyl dibenzofuran, polyvinyl naphthalene, polyvinyl anthracene, polyvinyl pyrene, poly-N-substituted acrylamides or copolymers of the corresponding monomers. The elastomer may be polybutadiene, polychloroprene, polyisoprene, polyisobutene or copolymers of the corresponding monomers with vinyl monomers. The weight ratio of photoconductive polymer to elastomer should be above 1 : 1, preferably from 2 : 1 to 4 : 1. To make the composition, elastomer particles maybe blended with the polymer using heat and shearing, or the polymer dissolved in a solvent may be blended with the elastomer optionally suspended in a compatible solvent. Alternatively, a monomer may be emulsion polymerized in the presence of the elastomer emulsion or emulsions of the photoconductive polymer and elastomer may be blended and coagulated. The monomer may alternatively be polymerized in the presence of elastomer to form a product which includes both homopolymer and a graft or block polymer on the elastomer. This product may itself constitute the composition according to the invention, or may constitute elastomer phase when blended with further photoconductive polymer. Modifying the elastomer by graft or block polymerization may aid in preventing phase separation. The composition may be used as a self-supporting photoconductive layer or applied to a base in conventional electrophotographic processes.
