Abstract
1388545 Catadioptric objective RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 26 May 1972 [9 June 1971] 19791/71 Heading G2J A catadioptric objective comprises an annular concave primary mirror having a curvature lying between F and 1/F, where F is the equivalent focal length of the complete objective, a secondary mirror receiving light from the primary mirror and reflecting it to an image-receiving area positioned within 0.1F of the central aperture of the primary mirror, and at least one lens component, the sum total of the curvatures of individual surfaces multiplied by the change in the reciprocal of the mean refractive index when crossing the respective surfaces (with the refractive indices difference at the mirror surfaces counting as -2 or 2 being numerically not greater than 1/3 F and the overall length of the objective not exceeding 1.6F. The objective may include a lens component behind the secondary mirror having its rear surface not more than F/2 from the focal plane. The objective may also include an astigmation correcting doublet followed by a field flattening lens behind the secondary mirror. One or more lens components of power between -1/10F and 1/3F may be placed in front of the primary mirrors, one of which carries the secondary mirror on its rear surface. A focusing mechanism may move the two mirrors and any lenses associated with the second mirror. Data are given for five examples of which one is for use with infrared wavelengths.
