Abstract

1388408 Radio navigation INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 10 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 37289/72 Relates to a digital receiver affording bearing measurement from at remote phase beacon transmitting angular reference signals together with a complex rotating signal which includes components at frequencies f and nf (e.g. 15 Hz and 135 Hz as in the TACAN system). According to the invention main PP and secondary AP reference pulses are derived, of respective repetition frequencies f, nf; main and secondary "half-reference" pulses HPP, HAP are derived from pulses PP, AP and are equi-spaced between corresponding PP and AP pulses; and the bearing determination utilizes the HPP, HAP pulses to eliminate erroneous bearing determination when the bearing is near to 0 degrees, (360 degrees/n), (2.360 degrees/n) ... 360 degrees. In the embodiment TACAN received and decoded pulses PM produce pulses MP at 135 Hz repetition rate, and a bi-stable 13 produces a digital "1" when the phase of 15 Hz pulses within Œ20 degrees of a gate centred on 0 degrees of 15 Hz phase. AND gate 14 delivers "start" pulses DP, each of which is the closest 135 Hz modulation pulse to zero of the 15 Hz sine wave. The first pulse MP of a 15 Hz cycle is synchronous with pulse DP. Pulses AP, HAP, PP, HPP are produced on respective lines 30, 301, 31, 311 by a system II which incorporates a clock pulse generator 19 operating at 270r, where r is the division ratio of a divider 20, the generator 19 being automatically controlled in frequency by a 135 Hz phase comparator 18. System III includes a "secondary" pulse counter 34, corresponding to twenty degrees of bearing and logic circuits which, together with further logic circuits in system IV control "main" counter (0 to 360 degrees) 47 and register 48. A divider 56 permits calculation of the average value of eight measurements.
