Abstract

1388393 Beds and frames; lathes WAVIN PLASTICS Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [11 June 1971] 27057/71 Headings B3B and B3T [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for machining the ends of a plastics (e.g. polypropylene) tube 12 to form a roll or mandrel (see Division F2) comprises two clamps 3, 4 (e.g. operated manually, hydraulically or pneumatically) for the tube whose axial spacing is adjustable and which is slidable axially (e.g. under mandrel control) along a pair of slide bars 2, into and out of the operating range of tools 15 (16, 17) Fig. 2 (not shown) each with a separate motor 18 mounted in a head 13 movable (e.g. manually, hydraulically or pneumatically) normal to Fig. 1 to align the different tools with the tube. The first tool may counterbore the tube end and when fully inserted, extend two cutters to form annular grooves in the counterbore. The second tool may form a notch in the tube end, and the third tool may chamfer the notch. After machining one tube end 12a a flanged bush with an external key to engage the notch, and an internal keyway, may be inserted and the tube reversed. To axially locate the tube 12 in the clamps 3, 4, there may be a tailstock 8 pivoted to the clamp with a first part 9 to engage a plain tube end when the first end 12a is machined, and a keyed 24 spigot 23 to engage the inserted bush when the second tube end 12b is machined. The apparatus may also have a circular saw 22 for cutting into lengths a continuous tube, fed through an aperture (21) in the head 13.
