Abstract

C. engine fuel/air mixture ratio is checked by measuring the intensity of the infrared emission from the flame during combustion in the combustion chamber by an infrared photo-sensitive device and feeding the signal therefrom to an indicator means. The infrared radiation is passed through a transparent spark plug device 1, fitted in a tubular adaptor 2 provided with a slot 10 for the ignition lead 11, and a photo-sensitive device 18 which transmits an electrical signal via an impedance converter (25) Fig. 3 (not shown) and a variable gain amplifier (26), to an indicator e.g. a meter, audible device or 'magic' eye. An automatic control means (not described) may effect the adjustment. Hole 21 in end-plate 20 may be covered with copper gauze.
