Abstract
1388383 Sulphonic acids ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 8 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 6592/71 Heading C2C A process for sulphonating (sulphating) hydrocarbons, fatty acids or alcohols comprises reacting the hydrocarbon with a preformed sulphonating mixture comprising H 2 SO 4 or oleum, an aryl sulphonic acid anhydride and an anhydride promoter prepared by passing SO 3 into a composition comprising an aryl sulphonic acid and said promoter in substantial absence of the aromatic compound from which the aryl sulphonic acid anhydride is derived, or a precursor of such a mixture, i.e. SO 3 and said composition. Specified anhydride promoters are carboxylic acids having up to 6 C atoms, ketones having up to 6 C atoms, ethers having up to 6 C atoms in each alkyl group, cyclic ethers, esters of C 2 - C 6 carboxylic acids, esters of phosphoric acid and phosphorous acid, primary, secondary and tertiary amines and salts thereof, alkylolamines, alkylolamides, amides, ammonium compounds, aromatic amines, and nitrogencontaining heterocyclic analogues of naphthalene. Specified hydrocarbons are alkylaryl hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The process may be carried out in a batchwise or continuous manner in two or three stages. Examples are given for the production of toluene sulphonic acid.
