Abstract

1388292 Removal of hydrogen from chlorine IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 March 1973 [21 April 1972] 18628/72 Heading C1A The invention comprises a process for the catalytic removal of hydrogen from a gas containing hydrogen and chlorine which comprises treating the gas with active carbon granules in a reaction zone maintained at a temperature from 125‹ to 250‹ C., part of the heat liberated in the treatment being used to heat gas to be treated and part of the heating being effected by means of a heat transfer fluid, the process having one or more of the following features: (i) the gas is treated under superatmospheric pressure, (ii) a control mechanism is provided for controlling the rate of flow and/or temperature of the heat transfer fluid, (iii) the flow of the heat-transfer fluid is generally co-current to the direction of flow of the gas, (iv) the flow of the heat-transfer fluid is additionally cross-current to the direction of flow of the gas, (v) the treatment is carried out in one or more elongated reaction vessels containing active carbon granules, the or each vessel being at least partially surrounded by a larger vessel through which the heat-transfer fluid is passed. The heat-transfer fluid is preferably a gas, e.g. air or nitrogen, and the gas treated may be electrolytic chlorine.
