Abstract

1387270 Precipitation of Ni, Co and Pb FALCONBRIDGE NICKEL MINES Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 21944/74 Divided out of 1387269 Heading C1A Non-ferrous metals selected from the group comprising Ni, Co and Pb are precipitated as sulphides from mineral aqueous acidic solution by introducing to the solution H 2 S and a particulate iron bearing substance in which the iron is present in a form selected from the group comprising oxides, hydroxides and combinations thereof. The iron bearing substance may be produced by hydrolysis of iron chloride, or may be a calcine produced by the oxidative roasting of an iron bearing sulphidic material or may be ferrous hydroxide produced by the addition of ammonium hydroxide to iron values contained in the aqueous acidic solution. The iron bearing substance may be present in an amount such as to react with substantially all free acid in the aqueous solution and the acid generated during precipitation of the non-ferrous metals which may take place at a temperature between 50‹ C. and the boiling point of the solution. The aqueous acidic solution may be a solution obtained by the leaching of iron and nickel bearing sulphidic materials using hydrochloric acid which after treatment by the process of the invention may provide almost pure ferrous chloride solution suitable for the regeneration of hydrochloric acid which may be used in the leaching of the sulphidic material and pure iron oxide which may be used in the process of the invention. The H 2 S gas in the process of the invention may be that produced in the leaching of the sulphidic material.
