Abstract

1387196 Two-part couplings; distribution systems AMERICAN MODULAR SYSTEMS DESIGNS Inc 20 Nov 1972 53518/72 Headings H2E and H2H Wall panels 14a-14c, of which some 14c carry electrical devices, fit removably into ceiling channels 12. Permanent wiring in the panels 14c runs from the electrical devices to connectors (32, Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) at the top which are exposed through the channels 12 and which mate with connectors 33 connected by leads 44 to junction boxes 38 which may contain transformers and to relays 42 which rest on the ceiling panels 18 and can easily be moved. The use of disconnectible connectors allows the panels 14a-14c to be re-arranged easily. A panel 14c may carry a power outlet (24, Fig. 2, not shown), a telephone (26), a clock (28) and switches (30) which control lighting units 20 through the relays 42. Each connector 32, 33 comprises one or more hermophroditic modules 50 (Fig. 5). Each module 50 has dovetail ridges 64 and slots (66, Fig. 6, not shown) to allow stacking, mounting grooves 68 and a single contact 52. A portion 58 fits a portion 60 of the mating module. The connectors (32) on a panel 14c are fixed in baskets (36, Fig. 4, not shown) which in turn fit in vertically sprung shoes (22) which are retracted when the panel 14c is being moved and are released to spring into a channel 12 to hold the panel in position. Each connector 33 comprises modules 50 in a U-shaped clamp (Fig. 7). Solid dummy modules 82 prevent incorrect mating. The modules 50 are described in detail in U.S.A. Specifications 3,091,746 and 3,218,599.
