Abstract
1387140 Bowden mechanisms; toothed gearing ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 18 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 58253/72 Headings F2K and F2Q In a drive device comprising an axially movable flexible screw-threaded, i.e. toothed cable rack guided and supported by a guide tube in a cable box and meshing in the latter with a reversible drive gear, the guide tube is releasable from the cable box to allow lateral freedom of the rack from the gear to permit axial adjustment of the cable rack relative to the gear. As shown, in an operating mechanism for a window, sliding roof or the wiping elements (12) of a motor vehicle headlamp cleaning system (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), the arrangement includes a drive unit comprising, in a housing 15, a gear-wheel 16 driven by a reversible motor via a reduction gear (both not shown) and meshing one, or as shown, two helically ribbed guided cables 13 forming flexible racks connected to the wipers (12), the cables 13 each being guided in the housing 15 by guide tube members each formed in two sections 19, 20 which may be temporarily withdrawn from the casing 15 during initial installation of the device on the motor-vehicle such that the cables 13, when assembled, i.e. introduced into the housing 15, are laterally free from mesh with the gear 16 to allow the drive unit to be fixedly mounted and the cables 13 readily connected to the wipers (12) without the need for a separate adjustment therebetween. The temporary axial freedom of the cables 13 whilst free from the gear 16 facilitates automatic adjustment of the cables relative to the gear 16 after which, when the overall assembly is complete, the cables 13 and gear 16 are brought into operative mesh by insertion of the guide member sections 19, 20 into the housing 15. Each guide member 20 has an extension 25 which spans and supports its associated cable 13 across the housing 15, the extension being cut-away to clear the toothed gear 16 &c. The guide members 19, 20 are secured to the housing by screws 27 and have serrated connections 21 over which flexible guide tubes 14 are pushed and retained. A further embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) similarly permits lateral release of the cables 13 from the drive gear 16 to facilitate ready, i.e. automatic adjustment of the cables relative the gear during initial installation assembly of the unit on the vehicle.
