Abstract

1386811 Rotary positive-displacement machines BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO Ltd 26 April 1973 [29 April 1972] 19989/72 Heading F1F In an I.C. engine that may be of the Wankel type (as shown) an air induction passage comprises passageways 17 in the rotor 5 and on the downstream side of the latter a chamber 24, which serves as an air reservoir and compensates for flow restrictions in other sections of said passage. An aperture 26 may be formed in an eccentric journal for the rotor. A flywheel 19 and balance weight 20 are secured to the mainshaft 7. A pipe 25 leading to the inlet port of the working chambers may contain a carburetter, the throttle valve of the latter being linked with a valve that when open admits secondary air to the air reservoir chamber, Fig.3 (not shown). Alternatively, the secondary air valve is spring loaded and pressure actuated, Fig.4 (not shown). The engine may have two or more rotors with either a separate air reservoir to each rotor or a common air reservoir chamber, which may comprise a separate compartment for each rotor and a valve between adjacent compartments, the valve being opened or closed according to engine operating conditions, Figs.5 to 7 (not shown). The air reservoir chamber may also serve as a heat exchanger and have cooling fins internally or externally thereof. The said chamber may be constituted either by the pipes leading to the inlet port or, when the engine is that of a motor cycle, by one or more of the tubular frame members.
