Abstract
1386702 Making valves upsetting MITSUBISHI JIDOSHA KOGYO KK and MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 9 June 1972 [10 June 1971] 27176/72 Headings B3A and B3H A method of forming from a metal pipe 1 a metallic part having a hollow stem and a projecting cup portion whose diameter is greater than that of the stem, e.g. an engine valve, comprises bending the wall of the pipe outwards at one end of the pipe, simultaneously or subsequently subjecting the said end of the pipe to a hot upsetting process by means of an anvil 2, and subjecting the pipe to a further forging operation to form the desired part. A pipe 1, having an electrode 3 clamped thereon, is placed between an electrode anvil 2 and a ram 4. The pipe end is then subjected to resistance heating after which the ram 4 is moved to bend the pipe wall outwards as shown at y in Fig. la, either before or during the start of an upsetting of the pipe wall. The pressure exerted by the ram 4 is gradually increased until the pipe end is upset as shown in Fig. 1b. Futher forging operation are effected to produce hollow cap or hollow body valves (Figs. 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b).
