Abstract

1386386 Automatic control of electrolysis ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 26 March 1973 [6 April 1972] 14491/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division C7] In the production of aluminium from a bath containing aluminium chloride, the concentration of AlCl 3 is detected and periodically adjusted. The concentration is detected by measuring the bath conductivity, the voltage at constant current, the current, at constant voltage or by computing the total cell resistance from measurements of the voltage, the current and the counter electromotive force. The operation may be performed automatically by a computer working with an AlCl 3 feeder. The bath may be alkali metal chloride or alkaline earth metal chloride. The AlCl 3 may be solid, liquid, dissolved in fused salt, gaseous or may be transported in a carrier gas e.g. Cl 2 , CO 2 , N2. Readings may be taken at 30 sec-3 min intervals. In Fig. 4 device 3 measures the current flowing through cells 2 to 2n. R.C. circuits prevent extraneous electrical noise reaching the digital computer 1 and provide averaged current and voltage signals. These are passed through analog/digital converter 4 before reaching computer 1. The computer may compare the signals with standards obtained from chemical analysis then transmit independent commands to the feeders. The feeders may be screw conveyers, solenoid operated gravity feed conveyers or valves admitting liquid or gaseous AlCl 3 .
