Abstract
1386337 Partitioning articles EMHART CORP 27 Sept 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 44664/72 Heading B8C Paperboard separators are inserted between the rows and columns of like articles in a slug as they are moved through a machine. The slugs of articles are conveyed between guides 34, 36 along a deadplate table 32 by primary flight bars 30 mounted between chains 28. Secondary flight bars 74 mounted on bell crank levers 76 pivoted to the chains 28 precede the slugs of articles. At each station A-C adjacent columns of articles are separated by lane dividers 38, 70, 72 and a separator (40a, 40b, 40c) is dropped from a hopper (64) between the separated columns. Separators are successively fed to the hopper (64) from a magazine by a reciprocating stripper plate (52) operated by a piston and cylinder device (56-60) which also periodically removes the floor of the hopper to release the separator. At stations D and E adjacent rows of articles are separated by tilting as they pass over ramps 90, 92 to allow separators (72a, 72b) to drop therebetween . The secondary flight bars 74 are pivoted forwardly by cams 85d, 85e on the guides 34, 36 to permit the articles to tilt. At station F a plunger 88 is periodically lowered to ensure that the separators are correctly seated. A cam follower 80 on each bell crank lever 76 co-operates with a cam surface 82 at the end of the machine to pivot the secondary flight conveyers 74 out of the path of the articles. The chains 28 are entrained over sprockets 20 driven by a motor 26 through a variable speed device 24 such that they are slowed at each station A-F. The device comprises a cam 102 carried by a drive shaft 100 continuously rotated by the motor 26, a cam follower 104 carried by one lever 106 of a threelever linkage 106, 108, 110, and a chain 114 passing round a drive sprocket 112, sprockets 120, 122 carried by the lever 110, fixed sprockets 116, 118 and a sprocket 124 by means of which the sprocket 20 is rotated.
