Abstract

1386277 Loading electrical connectors AMP Inc 17 April 1972 [27 May 1971] 17558/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] Apparatus for electrically connecting wires 14 simultaneously to slots 51, Fig. 10, of individual contact elements (46), Fig. 2 (not shown), of an electrical connector 16, Fig. 3, comprises a first jig for holding the connector, a second jig 140 for holding the wires, both jigs being relatively movable between a first position in which the jigs are remote from one another and a second position in which the jigs are adjacent to one another, and tooling movable to insert the wires into the slots of the contact elements when the connector and wires are held in respective jigs. The connector has a portion (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), defining a channel 34 for receiving a rib constituting a plug member (not shown) of a mating connector, both connectors being used for connecting individual pairs of wires of cables 8, e.g. telephone cables, to be spliced. The first jig comprises an arm 126, a supporting surface 132, and steel spring plates 134, 134<SP>1</SP> to hold the connector in position. The jig 140 is mounted on a support arm (142), Fig. 4 (not shown), having a central elongate slot (143), Figs. 6, 7, 9 (not shown), through which a block 188, which constitutes part of the tooling, can be moved. A locating block 180 facilitates proper location of the wires in the jig and thence the connector. The wire trimming and insertion block 188 is secured to a lever 190 and pivots about a pin 148. A further jig 140<SP>1</SP> is supplied for connecting the other wire of each pair 15 of wires to the connector, and functions identically to jig 140. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 12 (not shown), the frame block which supports the connector is pivoted on an arm (212) to facilitate positioning of the wires in jigs 140, 140<SP>1</SP>. Operation.-Pairs 15 of wires are selected from cable 8 and positioned in jigs 140, 140<SP>1</SP> preferably starting from the innermost jig position. The arms (142) are then swung inwardly until pins 184, 184<SP>1</SP> enter notches (186), 186<SP>1</SP>. Handles 192, 192<SP>1</SP> are then swung upwardly to cause blocks 188, 188<SP>1</SP> to pass through openings 143, 143<SP>1</SP>. Flanges 200, 200<SP>1</SP> on arms 142, 142<SP>1</SP> engage wires 14 and push them towards portions (48) of the contact elements. As flanges 198, 1981 move past edges 138, 1381 of plates 134, 134<SP>1</SP> the ends of wires 14 are sheared off and the wires are forced through mouths 50 of slots 51 into the slots by pins 202, 202<SP>1</SP> to become securely seated in portions 48 of the contact elements. Where the connector has only one row of contact elements only one wire holding jig and its associated wire trimming and inserting means is provided.
