Abstract

1386220 Tuning musical instruments B C POPE 29 Sept 1973 45635/73 Heading G5J A frequency detector, e.g. for use in tuning pianofortes comprises a microphone A feeding a frequency converter C and fixed reference frequency generator D. The frequency converter C is adjustable so that its output equals the reference frequency if the frequency detected by the microphone is at its nominal frequency and varies from the reference frequency if the detected note is out of tune. The outputs of reference generator D and frequency converter C are connected alternately through electronic switches E1, E2 to a frequency to voltage converter G the output of which is connected by electronic switches H1, H2 to the inputs of a differential amplifier J. The amplifier output is shown on meter M. The frequency to voltage converter G preferably comprises a voltagecontrolled oscillator and a multiplying circuit in a phase-locked-loop. An amplitude sensor B renders the circuit inoperative if the audible signal entering A falls below a predetermined level.
