1385596 Anthranthrene compounds N S DOKUNIKHIN G N VOROZHTSOV F I KICHINA and N B FELDBLUM 5 April 1973 16438/73 Heading C4P The invention comprises anthranthrene compounds of the general formula wherein alk is C 1 -C 10 alkyl X is (a) or -CO-Y-CO- where Y is an oxygen atom or >NH or NR in which R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, or aryl substituted by alkoxy or halogen or is a group where R<SP>1</SP> is H, halogen or alkoxy. They are prepared by cyclizing compounds of the general formula wherein Z is >CHOH or >CO and alk and X are as defined above in presence of condensing agents, e.g. phosphorus oxychloride, phosphoric acid, alcohol-HCl mixture, sulphuric acid, mixture of acetic and HBr, NaOH and KOH. A reducing agent may also be present.
