Abstract

1385551 Regulating the flow of fluids LENINGRADSKY ORDENA LENINA POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT IMENI M I KALININA 14 July 1972 32974/72 Heading G3H An electro-hydraulic converter, suitable for varying the hydraulic resistance of a dielectric liquid in a pressure pipe section, comprises inlet and outlet dielectric sleeves 2 and 3, respectively, extending from the ends of a housing section 1, the section constituting an outer electrode. Disposed within the housing is a metal rod 4 which constitutes an inner electrode, the rod being retained relative to the housing section by two network elements 5 which are of a dielectric material. The inner and outer electrodes 4 and 1, are connected to the terminals of a D. C. source 8. Pressures at the inlet 6 and outlet 7 are measured by gauges 11 and 12. In use, liquid in laminar flow through the dielectric network elements 5 becomes charged and so, when the electrodes are connected to the source 8, suffers a control due to the electric field existing between the electrodes which causes the flow to become turbulent, the degree of control being related to the field intensity. In other embodiments, dielectric threads are arranged on the inner electrode, and the latter may take the form of a metal band arranged in a groove of a dielectric member.
