Abstract

1385544 Mounting engines HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 10 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 21979/72 Heading B7H A mounting arrangement for a power unit 1 of the type having an output shaft 2 parallel to the crank-shaft 4 of an engine 3 incorporated in the power unit 1 includes an elastic supporting member 6 which is positioned below the central axis of vibration a (engine idling condition) of the unit 1, a face of this member 6 being parallel to the central axis a, and a tie rod 7 pivoted to the unit 1 and the vehicle body 5, at least one of these connections including an elastic bush 10 or a gap, the arrangement being such that the tie rod is swung towards the unit 1 about its connection 8 to the vehicle body 5 by the torque reaction generated during acceleration. As described the unit is transversely mounted in the vehicle. The elastic member 6 is bonded to a plate 11 fixed to the unit 1 and is bonded to a plate 13 fixed to the vehicle body 5, movement of the unit 1 being limited by a flange 12 on plate 11 and a pair of flanges 14, 14<SP>1</SP> on plate 13. In use during unloaded rotation of the engine, the unit 1 is vibrated about the central axis a and the member 6 bears only shearing force. The elastic bush 10 (or gap) absorbs this vibration and therefore the tie rod 7 remains stationary, the member 6 absorbing the vibration. During acceleration the torque reaction tilts the unit 1 rearwardly and the tie rod is rotated inwardly (anti-clockwise about pivot 8) so that the torque reaction is transmitted to the member 6 as a compressive force. The unit 1 is also supported by a bracket 15 which is connected to the vehicle body 5 through an elastic body 16.
