1385381 Treating gutted fish NORDISCHER MASCHINENBAU RUD BAADER 28 March 1972 14523/72 Heading A2U A method of severing heads of gutted fishes by a wedge-shaped cut wherein the head of each fish is aligned and secured and the head severed, and then the parts containing the collar bones are separated from the head by cuts guided into the gill cavities. The method is particularly applicable to fishes in which the gill and abdominal cavities have been opened, in which case, the fish is fixed in position by straddling the gill cavity and supporting the head between the arc of the lower jaw, whereupon the body is cut off and the parts containing the collar bone severed by cuts directed downwardly from the neck. The method may be carried out in the device shown in Fig. 1 which comprises a conveyor 2 capable of stepwise motion, head severing device 4 which includes circular knives 42, 43 arranged to contain an obtuse angle with their cutting edges, and a separating device 5 which includes circular knives 52, 53 arranged in a common plane. Each fish is supported on the conveyor in a receiving means 3, as indicated in Fig. 2 (not shown). In operation, a fish is positioned in receiving means 3 and during an advancing movement of the conveyor, support 35 (Fig. 2, not shown) pivots upwardly and enters the spread open abdominal cavity, thereby lifting the vertebral column. After further movement of the conveyor, knives 42, 43 pivot about axis 45 and remove the head from the body. The collar bones are removed from the head by knives 52, 53 after a further movement of the conveyor.
