Abstract

1385105 Voided polyester fibres FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc 19 May 1972 [20 May 1971] 23615/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] A voided polyester fibre is made by incorporating into a polymer composed of at least 85% (by weight of polymer) of fiber-forming polyester from 5 to 25% (by weight of polymer) of a sulphonate of the formula where R may be hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1 to 20 carbon atoms; Ar may be unsubstituted arylene with 6 to 30 carbon atoms or substituted arylene with 6-30 carbon atoms, wherein the substituents on the substituted arylene are selected from alkyl or alkoxy radicals each with 1-8 carbon atoms; X may be -O-, -NH-, or -S-; R<SP>1</SP> alkylene with 1 to 20 carbon atoms; n = 0 or 1; and M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal. The polymer is then extruded into a fibre which is drawn to a draw ratio of from 2 to 5 and the drawn fibre is leached with warm water or steam at 20‹ to 220‹ C. for 1 to 120 mins., resulting in the production of a voided fibre containing 4-8% of the sulphonate and having a reflectance of at least 28% and an opacity of at least 31%. In a typical example, sodium octylbenzene sulphonate is added to the polymer, which is melt-spun at 290‹ C. The spun yarn is drawn to a draw ratio of 3À3 over a feed roll heated to 100‹ C. and the fibre scoured to produce the voids.
