1384980 Cyclohexenyl terpene sulphones RHONE-POULENC SA 9 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 16936/73 Heading C2C Novel compounds of Formula I (in which Is is -CH = CH-C(CH 3 ) = CH-, n is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 and R is alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or aryl which may be substituted by one or more electron-attracting or electron-donor groups) are prepared by (a) oxidizing a compound of Formula II or (b) reacting an alkali metal sulphinate of formula RSO 2 M where M is an alkali metal with a compound of Formula IV Examples are given of the preparation of compounds I in which R is phenyl and n is 1 or 2. Compounds I are useful as intermediates in the preparation of vitamin-type compounds or carotenoids.
