Abstract
1384285 Intumescent coatings PITTSBURGH CORNING CORP 12 Sept 1972 [14 Sept 1971] 42369/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C4] A plastics foam substrate (none are particularly specified) may be coated with an intumescent fire-proofing and heat-insulating composition which intumesces continuously over the range 300-2000‹F and comprises (i) 25-60% by wt. of a water-soluble alkali metal silicate having a peak cellulation temperature of 300-350‹F; (ii) 10-50% by wt. of a mixture of pulverulent glass and a carbonaceous cellulating agent therefor, having a peak cellulation temperature of about 1600‹F, and (iii) 10-45% by wt. of a cellulatable refractory material having a peak cellulation temperature above about 2000‹F; each percentage being based on the total (i), (ii) and (iii). The silicate may be Na or K, the cellulating agent in. (ii) may be carbon black, lamp black or coal, or carbon black with sodium sulphate, and the refractory (iii) may be a clay, particularly. Minford Silt or Old Hickory Clay. The composition may also contain fillers, and may be formulated as a liquid or paste for spray, brush, dip, trowel or extrusion application to the substrate.
