Abstract

1384136 Condensing data HONEYWELL INFORMATION SYSTEMS Inc 8 Sept 1972 [8 Sept 1971] 41937/72 Heading G4A The data on records in an input file, each record having an assigned record type code, is condensed in a data processor by comparing each record item from the input file character by character with a record item stored in a memory having the same record type code, building control strings for matching successive compared characters exceeding a predetermined minimum number (which in the embodiment described is four), building control strings for successive compared characters not matching and for successive compared characters matching which are less than the minimum number and transferring control strings and non- matching characters to an output file for storage. As described each control string comprises 18 bits, bits 1-6 indicating the record type, bit 7 being a data indicator indicating whether a further control string or data follows, bit 10 being a continuation indicator, indicating whether the information is a continuation of the same record type used in the previous control string and bits 11-18 indicating the length of the characters that follow the control string or are to be extracted from the previously stored record. The flow chart for deriving the control strings is given in Figs. 1a, 1b, 1c (not shown). From the information on the output file the data may be decondensed (flow chart given in Figs. 3a, 3b, not shown) by examining the control string to determine the record type, data indicator, continuation indicator and string length, a pointer being incremented by the string length after each control is processed. The system may be used for storing information relating to bills and for printing out the stored information.
