Abstract

1383915 Credit-card freed cash dispenser BURROUGHS CORP 12 April 1972 [13 Oct 1971] 57615/72 Headings G4X and G4M A credit-card freed cash dispenser comprises a card reading device SCP, CR, cryptographic means CU for modifying information read from a card, a personal identification generator for generating a personal identification based upon the modified information, a keyboard 15, a comparator CNC connected to the generator and keyboard, and a cash dispensing device CCDU controlled by said comparator in dependence upon a correspondence between a password entered in said keyboard and said generated personal identification. In the embodiment described a read account number, e.g. AC1, is modified in the cryptographic unit CU in accordance with a random number look up table LU2 and the modified account number MAC1 is used to look up an encoded customer's password in security module SM, this is decoded in personal number generator PNG, the output of which is connected to comparator CNC together with the output of keyboard KB (see also Fig. 2, not shown). If the manually entered password and generated identification code correspond the cash dispensing operation is allowed to proceed, if not the customer may be permitted to try entering the password again, the card being retained if no correspondence is found after this attempt. A secure card property is also read by reader SCP and after modification in the cryptographic unit CU in accordance with random number look-up table LU1 is compared with a look-up table to determine if the card is a valid part of the system. The card may have other security features, Application 47616/71 being referred to in this respect. The card may also include a use delimiter number UD which is modified on each use of the card and carry information relating to a plurality of accounts from each of which the customer is entitled to draw money. To improve security the contents of the various look-up tables and decoding program of the PNG may be changed at any time by the bank by modifying the bank instruction code BSI and contents of the security module SM. A printer 19 may be provided to record details of the transactions or alternatively the dispenser may be on-line with a central computer for real time control.
