Abstract

138,389. Hall, G. N. Nov. 26, 1918. Operating doors by springs; checks.-Relates to door-operating devices of the type comprising a dash-pot and a resilient closing-medium disposed on opposite sides of a spindle connected to the door, and in which the resilient medium acts in a rectilinear direction transverse to the spindle. According to the invention, a common sliding member transmits motion from the spindle to the two actuated parts, and other features include provision for interchanging the resilient medium without deranging the spindle-actuated part with which it co-operates, a self-contained and readily detachable dash-pot, a crank-motion which provides for right and left hand operation and also for holding the door open, alternative rack-andpinion gear, and a special formation of the arm connexions between the spindle and the door. The body containing the mechanism comprises a centre part a, Fig. 1, for attachment to the door, and lateral tubular members b, c secured to the centre part a by faced flanges and screw pins. The member b contains two springs d, Figs. 1 and 2, connected as a self-contained unit by plates d<2>, d<4> with sliding connexions d<5>, d<6>. One plate d<4> abuts against a sliding frame g guided in slots a<4> in the centre part a by rollers g<2>. A slot g<1> in the frame g is engaged by a roller f<3> on a crankdisk f<1> on the main spindle f. The dash-pot member c is closed by a gland c<2> through which the piston-rod k projects for connexion with the frame g. The piston k<2> is provided with a ball valve k<3>. The liquid returns through an aperture k<4> regulated by a screw k<5>, a groove k<6> permitting freer escape of the liquid when the piston is near the end of the outward stroke. The main spindle f is mounted in ball bearings e<1>, e<2> on a sleeve e in the centre part a. The crank-motion automatically provides for right and left hand operation. The dead-centre position of the crank allows the door to remain open; this stationary position may be made more certain by providing a recess in the side of the slot g<1> to receive the roller f<3>. The crank may be replaced by a pinion engaging a toothed rack on one side of the frame g, in which case the change from right to left handed can be effected by providing racks on both sides of the slot, and mounting the sleeve e so that it has an eccentric adjustment for engaging the pinion with either rack. The arm connexions between the spindle and the door are made mainly of sheet metal. The main arm consists of two plates m, m<1>, Fig. 1, having a lug m<2> at one end for attachment to the spindle f. Near the other end, the plates m, m' are riveted together at m<3>, leaving the ends free to be sprung over a pivot pin r, over which are also sprung the free ends of a fork p, Figs. 1 and 5, adjustable on a screw pin r<3> secured to the door by a universal joint r<4>.
