Abstract

1383891 Flame cutting MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 30 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 15370/73 Heading B3V A flame cutting device comprises a carriage 10 carrying a cutting torch 14 and pivotally mounting a feeler lever 50 pivotally connected to a portion 30 of a piston-rod 30, 28 of a double acting cylinder 16, the arrangement being such that the feeler lever 50 on contact with the workpiece 52 is pivoted at 48 relative to the advancing carriage 10 to cause cams 32, 34 on a portion 28 of the piston-rod to operate limit switches 36, 38 which control the cutting process. The lever 50 is connected by a bell crank lever 46 and rod 44 to the piston-rod portion 30 which is connected to a piston 26 of the cylinder 16 fixed to the carriage 10. The other side of the piston 26 is connected to the piston-rod portion 28 carrying cams 32, 34. The piston 26 is initially maintained in its lower position by fluid under pressure supplied from a source (62), (Fig. 2, not shown) via valves (66, 60) and a pressure reducing device (68). In operation, the carriage 10 is moved towards the workpiece 52 at high speed but when the feeler lever 50 contacts the workpiece 52, it is pivoted to cause the piston 26 to move upwards and the cam 32 to actuate the limit switch 36, whereupon the carriage 10 is slowed or stopped and preheating flames are applied to the workpiece 52. After a predetermined time interval the valve (60) may be switched to cause the piston 26 to be raised by fluid pressure whereupon the limit switch 38 is operated by the cam 34 to turn on the cutting oxygen and to move the carriage 10 at the cutting speed.
