1383506 Filling containers BRISTOL PACKAGING MACHINES Ltd 26 Oct 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40732/71 Headings B8C and B8T A dispensing device for fluid material, e.g. margarine comprises a supply conduit 60 having a dispensing port 62 and a return port 63 leading into a return conduit 61, a valve 65 for closing both ports or for opening either port, and means for supplying successive quantities of material through conduit 60, and opening either the dispensing or return port in dependence on the presence or absence of a container 16 beneath the dispensing port. The containers 16 pass' down a shoot 21 provided with air jets 22 to a flexible helical spring 24 which presses the containers into compartments 15 of a conveyer 10 which feeds each container under one of a plurality of dispensing arms 35 rotating about a supply pipe 34. The valve 65 in each arm is connected to a gear segment on an arm 69 having a cam follower 70 riding in a cam track 73. In the dispensing zone in which there is a vibrating plate 32 the track is split into two paths 71, 72 and a sensor 30 on sensing the presence or absence of a container in a compartment 15 opens a respective path 71, 72 so that the arm rotates to cause the valve to open one of the ports. A piston 81 is then cammed upwardly to dispense the fluid through the opened port. Between positions 161 and 145 in Fig. 1 the conduit conduit 60 is connected to the interior of the supply pipe 34 to receive further fluid as the piston 81 is cammed downwardly. The lowermost position of the piston is adjustable to adjust the quantity dispensed. From the return conduit 61 the fluid passes around a piston 92 into a return pipe 91, the piston 92 permitting a bleed from the supply pipe 34.
