Abstract

1383474 Knee-joint prosthesis NEW YORK SOCIETY FOR THE RELIEF OF THE RUPTURED AND CRIPPLED 6 Feb 1973 [8 Fab 1972] 5734/73 Heading A5R A prosthetic knee-joint comprises a femoral condyle component 32 adapted to be secured to a femoral condyle 14, and a tibial condyle component 50 adapted to be secured to the corresponding tibial condyle 15, the femoral condyle component 32 comprising an elongated member adapted to extend from the anterior to the posterior of the femoral condyle and having a varying curvature in the anteriorposterior direction closely matching the anatomical shape of the femoral condyle and further having in sections transverse to its length a laterally-outwardly generally straight zone and a laterally-inwardly curved zone that is externally convex, the tibial condyle component 50 comprising an elongated member adapted to extend from adjacent the anterior extremity to adjacent the posterior extremity of the tibial condylar plateau, the tibial condyle component having an external surface closely matching in sections transverse to its length the transverse shape of the external surface of the femoral condyle component, the said external surface of the tibial condyle component being a surface generated by a substantially straight anterior-posterior line. A prosthetic knee-joint may be placed in either one or both of the femoral-tibial condyle pairs. As shown, the prosthetic knee-joint comprises two similar femoral condyle components 32, (34) Fig. 1, (not shown), interconnected by a crossbar 36, and two similar tibial condyle components 50. The crossbar 36 is curved to fit in the anterior intencondylar notch. The prosthetic knee-joint may be positioned without disturbing the lateral ligaments (20) and cruciate ligaments (22). The internal surfaces of each of the femoral condyle components carries a multiplicity of small pins 43 and an elongated post 40 formed with several shallow concavities 42. The femur is formed with holes 44 to receive the posts 40, and with posterior holes 46 and anterior holes 48. The tibial condyle components 50 are generally rectangular in plan but have rounded corners 51. The bottom surfaces 52 of the tibial condyle components are formed with undercut grooves 59, (58), Fig. 5 (not shown). The tibia is formed with oblique holes 60. The femur and tibia are resected to receive their respective condyle components with the exterior surfaces of the condyle components generally contiguous with the anatomical surfaces. The condyle components are secured by a bonding cement.
