Abstract
1383425 Automatic control of attitude FERRANTI Ltd 4 June 1973 [9 June 1972] 27125/72 Heading G3R A device for controlling the attitude of a body about an axis comprises an oscillating mass attached to the body, the moment of inertia of the mass being modulated at the frequency of oscillation of the mass, with control of the phase of the modulation relative to the mass oscillation. As shown, a mass 12 on a satellite is oscillated by motor 16 through gear-box 17. Signals dependent upon the angular position and direction of movement of mass 12, and upon the attitude of the satellite with respect to a fixed axis, for example from a gyroscope, are used by control 19 to vary the excitation of electromagnets 15 which control the position of weights (13) Fig. 2 (not shown), on spring cantilever arms carried by the mass. So that these weights are in different radial positions for different directions of the mass oscillations. The resultant different moment of inertia of mass 12 for the different directions produces a rotation on the satellite to control its attitude, such a control may be applied to more than one axis.
