Abstract
1383317 Coloured polyester fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 July 1972 [20 July 1971] 34011/71 Heading C3R At least two filaments or two groups of filaments, each or each group of which is differently coloured are made from polymers of the same predetermined molecular weight by melt spinning comprising the addition of a proportion of colouring material immediately prior to extrusion, the colouring material also being responsible for reduction in the average molecular weight of the polymer, the method being characterized by melt spinning separately first and second portions of polymer to yield first and second filaments or groups of filaments, the colouring material added to each portion of polymer being different in composition and/or proportion and being added to at least all but one of the portions of polymer prior to meltspinning, and adjusting the component polymers to the same average molecular weight by the addition of a proportion of a non-coloured additive. Polyesters, polyamides and polyolefins may be used in the melt-spinning process and they may be coloured with disperse dyestuffs. The non-coloured additives may be mono- or dicarboxylic acids, monohydric alcohols, glycols, alkyl esters of monocarboxylic acids in which alkyl is C 1-4 , dialkyl esters of dicarboxylic acids where alkyl is C 1-4 , phenyl esters of monocarboxylic acids, diphenyl esters of dicarboxylic acids, bis-(#-hydroxyalkyl) dicarboxylates and low molecular weight polyesters up to tetramers. The average molecular weight of polyesters may be raised by adding dicarboxylic acid anhydrides and diisocyanates. Examples describe the mixing of filaments from polyethylene terephthalate and bis-(#-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate.
