Abstract

1383140 Treating charge GENERAL MOTORS CORP 22 March 1973 [17 April 1972] 13731/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division G3] An exhaust gas recirculation control valve assembly uses I.C. engine exhaust back pressure to recirculate exhaust gas at a rate proportional to air-flow to a point downstream of an engine throttle. The valve assembly is used with an inlet and exhaust manifold 10, Fig.1, including an insert 42 in which a recirculation passage has first and second parts 60, 64 connectable with the valve assembly 62. The latter comprises a valve seat 78, Fig.3, between an inlet 72 and an outlet 74, a control mechanism maintaining a constant pressure in zone 92, a spring-closed valve member 80, a chamber 106 communicating through first and second openings with induction vacuum and atmosphere to apply a control pressure to a pressure-responsive member 84 connected to the valve member, the control pressure being regulated by a bleed valve 98. A pressureresponsive device 94 displaces the bleed valve 98 in response to increased pressure in zone 92, to decrease the control pressure resulting in unseating of valve 80 to increase exhaust gas recirculation, the bleed valve being biased to increase the control pressure in response to a decrease in the pressure in the zone thereby decreasing the exhaust gas recirculation. Diaphragms 94 and 84 tend to move in unison to maintain a constant pressure in zone 90 to maintain exhaust gas recirculation at a rate proportional to the rate that combustion air flows into the engine. In a modification a pressure drop in zone 130, Fig.4, causes a spring-loaded central diaphragm portion 138 to unseat a valve 154 to admit air from chamber 142 and openings 146 into chamber 148 causing spring displacement of diaphragm 126 and valve 122 downwardly to reduce exhaust gas recirculation. Chamber 148 may be connected to a carburetter, the manifold 10 or passage 64. In a further modification pressure in zone 174, Fig.5, raises diaphragm 180 and valve member 184 to reduce air-flow through orifice 188 into chamber 190 thereby causing a spring-loaded diaphragm 172 to unseat a valve 168 to increase exhaust gas recirculation. Valve 184 also may control the application of inlet vacuum to chamber 190 by shaping surface 208. Alternatively the connections of pipes 200 and 194 to fittings 194, 198 may be reversed so that valve surface 208 can control the application of vacuum to chamber 202. A valve 206 controlled by temperature may be connected in pipes 194, 196.
