Abstract
1382873 Electrode construction RADIOMETER AS 13 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1637/72 Addition to 1262019 Heading G1N An electrode comprises an electrically conductive body 20 of a mixture of graphite and a thermoplastic polymer hydrophobizing the graphite and has a surface 26 to contact a liquid sample and a solid electrical conductor 16 engaging the body remote from the surface 26. A redox or ion selective substance is preferably applied on the surface 26 or disposed throughout the body, preferably so that its concentration is a maximum at the surface 26. The electrode may be enclosed in a polymer tube of e.g. PTFE. The thermoplastic polymer is preferably PTFE, PVC or polyethylene, and the electrode may be made by compression moulding. The layer of active material may be applied by deposition from a solution or in solid form by grinding the end of the electrode, rubbing in the active material powder and polishing, preferably on a heated surface. Redox sensors may use platinum, gold or unhydrophobized graphite as active material. Ion selective electrodes may use as active material AgI/Ag 2 S in proportions between 8:1 and 1:8 (for Ag<SP>+</SP> and I<SP>-</SP>); Ag Br or Ag Br/Ag 2 S (for Ag<SP>+</SP> and Br<SP>-</SP>); AgI or AgI/Ag 2 S (for Ag<SP>+</SP> and I<SP>-</SP>); Hg or Hg S (for Hg<SP>2+</SP>); Cu or Cu S or Cu S/Hg S 1:1 or Cu S/Ag 2 S 1:1 or Cu S/Cd S 1:1 or Cu (diethyldithiocarbomate) 2 or Cu Se/ Cu 2 Se 1:2 or Cu S/Ag 2 S/Cd S 10:10:1 (for Cu<SP>2+</SP>); Pb S/Ag 2 S 1:1 (for Pb<SP>2+</SP>); Cd S/Ag 2 S 1:1 (for Cd<SP>2+</SP>); Zn S/Ag 2 S and calcium wolfromate.
