Abstract

1382827 Forging JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 20 March 1972 [1 April 1971] 8489/71 Heading B3H A helically splined starter motor sleeve is made by forcing a helically splined tool 17 into or over the sleeve to displace the sleeve material to the desired form either internally or externally of the sleeve. In one embodiment the tool 17 is carried on a support 15 rotatably mounted in a carriage 13. The support 15 has a rearwardly extending screw 21 engaged with a fixed nut 22 to rotate the tool as it descends. The sleeve is mounted in a chuck 12. The inside diameter of the sleeve (30a), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be greater, equal to or less than the pitch diameter (30b) of the tool. The ends of the teeth (24), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), of the tool are relieved (27), (28). In an alternative embodiment the tool is fixed and the sleeve rotatably carried by the support 15. The nut 22 may be fixed to the support 15 and the screw 21 fixed to the apparatus frame 11. The rotation of the support 15 may be effected by a gear train instead of the nut and screw. In a further alternative the tool 17 is mounted for linear movement and the sleeve supported for free angular movement. If the wall thickness of the sleeve is thin it may be supported by three fluid pressure biased fingers (37), Fig. 6 (not shown).
