Abstract
1382789 Non-woven fabric; corrugating webs KENDALL CO 29 Oct 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 50248/73 Headings D1R and D1S A conformable bandage material comprises a non-woven strip of entangled cellulosic fibres having a repeating series of wave-like undulations each of which extend across the width of the strip, the peaks and valleys 12 being dense compared to the side slopes 14 which have a lower fibre density and greater extensibility. To make the bandage, superposed carded cotton webs, in each of which the fibres are predominently orientated in the longitudinal direction, are continuously fed without tension onto the surface of a bath of 8-30% aqueous NaOH, floated across the surface of the bath, removed on a conveyor, washed with water, sprayed with dilute acetic acid, and calendered and dried on heated rotary drums, in an oven or under infra-red lamps. The alkaline treatment swells the fibres producing curling kinking looping and twisting of the fibres to yield a shrunk, felt-like sheet. Preferably the reduction in area is less than 40%. The dry sheet is then stretched to increase its area by 8 to 45% by transferring from one roll to a faster rotating roll, by passing it through a button breaker or between rotating gears, by drawing it over knife edges or bars of small diameter or by tentering. The clingability, thickness, softness and tensile strength in the direction of stretching are thereby increased. The sheet is mechanically compressively shrunk in the longitudinal direction to produce the fabric shown by the method of U.S.A. Specification 2765513. The apparatus comprises a nip formed by a resilient surfaced faster rotating feeding roll and a second slower rotating roll. An indentor shoe presses incoming fabric against the feeding roll along a line spaced a short distance in front of the nip. Hence the fabric is positively fed up to and beyond the discharge edge of the indentor blade and then decelerated by engagement with the second roll, whose surface has a higher coefficient of friction than the feeding roll, e.g. an abrasive coating or soft rubber surface. The fabric weighs 40 to 120 g/sq. yd., has 8 to 16 convolutions/inch, an elongation at break of 50 to 70% and is shrunk by 10 to 40% during compaction.
