Abstract

1382780 Radiation sources ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI INSTITUT FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK GRUZINSKOI SSR 10 May 1973 22320/73 Heading G6R A source of ionizing radiation comprises a radioactive material dispersed in a moulded and hardened phenol-aldehyde resin. The resin may be resol-type phenol-formaldehyde, novolaktype phenol formaldehyde mixed with hexamethylenetetramine, resol-type resorcinol-formaldehyde, or a mixture of resol-type phenol-formaldehyde with novolak-type phenol-formaldehyde or phenol-benzaldehyde. In examples, sources are prepared containing Co60, Co58, Cs134, Mn54, a mixture of Fe59, Mn54, and P32, and a mixture of Cs134, Mn54, Sc46, Zn65, and Co60. A salt or mixture of salts containing the radiactive isotope or isotopes is dissolved in ethanol and mixed with an ethanol solution of the resin; ethanol is distilled off and the residue heated, ground, tableted under pressure, and cured by heating. The radiation source is suitable for the calibration of multi-channel gamma radiation spectrometers.
