Abstract

1382273 Pile fabrics FIELDCREST MILLS INC 14 Jan 1972 [29 Jan 1971] 1966/72 Headings DIG and D1K A tufted pile fabric comprises a backing fabric 15 having pile yarn tufts 16a extending upwardly from the upper face in longitudinal rows, said tufts having lower bight portions 16b with at least the upper surfaces thereof positioned above the lower face of backing fabric and a plurality of stitching threads S extending along the lower face of the fabric and having stitch portions extending upwardly into the backing fabric and through the lower bight portion of the tuft. The upper tufts 16a are formed over pile wires 16a which may be moved laterally relative to the fabric so that the tufting needles pass alternately over each side of the wire. The stitching or locking thread is passed through the lower bight by latch knitting needles and the yarn is a translucent synthetic monofil. Several embodiments are described the first alternative comprising a fabric in which the lower surfaces of the bights 16b lie within the base fabric and a second alternative in which the bights lie wholly above the upper surface of the base fabric. In a further modification a fabric can be produced in which a relative shogging takes place between the needles and other instrumentalities so that tufts are formed by one needle in alternate longitudinal rows allowing for changes of colour along longitudinal and transverse rows. By using a pile wire with two different heights long and short pile may be produced and the provision of cutters on the pile wire allows for cut pile fabrics including 'J' cut pile.
