1381456 Seaming non-metallic sheet material SEMPERIT AG 1 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 9917/73 Heading B5K A butt joint is formed between respective ends of two lengths of hollow-section strip of rubber or other elastic material by introducing a single- or multipiece core 10 which fills the internal cross-section of the strip into the strip lengths at the ends to be joined, bringing the end faces of the lengths to be joined into abutting relationship on the core 10, joining together the abutting end faces, removing the core 10 through an opening 11 made in the strip adjacent to the joint, and finally closing the opening 11. As shown in Fig. 1, the hollow strip comprises four walls 1, 2, 3, 4, the walls 3, 4 being depressed inwardly to form grooves 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>. The walls 1, 2 are reinforced by curved walls 5, 6 with the hollows formed thereby filled with foam rubber 7. The lengths to be joined are assembled so that half of the core length extends into each strip length. Joining is effected by vulcanizing or glueing, e.g. by using a mixture which produces hot or cold vulcanizing. A longitudinal slit 11 is produced in one strip length, preferably, having a length substantially equal to half that of the maximum periphery of the core 10 and the distance between the slit and the butt joint being substantially equal to half the overall length of the core. As shown in Fig. 2, the core 10 has a tapered end portion 12 terminating in an eye 13 into which a hooking tool 14 is inserted to withdraw the core 10 through the slit 11. The end faces of the strip lengths to be joined may have mating profiles, e.g. they may be chamfered or serrated. In a modification (not shown), the interior of the strip is divided into a number of separate cavities and each cavity is provided with its own core section during joining.
