Abstract

1381259 Change-Speed gear WILSON MILLER & CO Ltd 23 Dec 1971 [23 Sept 1970 12 Oct 1970] 45222/70 and 48295/70 Heading F2D A four speed and reverse gear C coaxial with a hydrokinetic torque converter B has a first input sleeve 16 mounting a sun 1 and driven from the converter B and a second input shaft 13 driven by the prime mover A through a clutch 15. The drives through first and second clutches 17, 15 connect a drive to the sun 1 and a planet carrier 6 respectively of the gear train C which drives a coaxial output shaft 5 through a ring gear 4 connected to it. A hand brake 10 acts on a drum 9 to hold an attached secondary sun 8 while a hand brake 12 acts on a drum 11 to hold the carrier 6. A uni-directional clutch 21 may be provided between a housing flange 22 and the carrier 6. For first ratio the first clutch 17 is engaged with the carrier 6 held by the clutch 21 or brake 12 to provide a drive from the converter B through a sleeve 18, clutch 17, sleeve 16, sun 1 and inner and outer planets 2, 3, and the ring gear 4 to drive the output shaft 5 in the same direction as the input drive. Second ratio is obtained by applying brake 10 to hold sun 8 to cause carrier 6 to rotate with the sun but at a lower speed to augment the rotation of the ring 4. Third ratio provides a split torque by releasing brake 10 and engaging the second clutch 15 providing a drive through the shaft 13 to the carrier 6 to rotate it at a speed greater than the sun 1 proportional to the degree of slip in the converter which effect is however reduced for given conditions by the proportion of torque diverted to the shaft 13. For fourth ratio clutch 17 is released brake 10 engaged thus freeing the converter output so that the drive is wholly through the shaft 13. Reverse is obtained by engaging a clutch 20 and brake 12 to drive the secondary sun 8 with the carrier 6 held. In modifications the clutch 15 may be placed on the output side of the planet carrier. In Fig. 5 a supplementary epicyclic gear train 44 may be provided with a toothed annulus 45 as an extension of the annulus 4<SP>11</SP> to give lower ratios while in another modification the supplementary gear may be omitted while still using unstepped long pinions.
