Abstract

1381111 Hydraulic brake systems; band brakes R REECE 23 March 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1919/71 Headings F2E and F2F A brake control system, including a fluid controlled brake actuating mechanism fed from an hydraulic power circuit thereby to maintain brakes inactive against biasing means, has a control valve 28 operable to relieve fluid pressure in the mechanism to actuate the brakes, means being provided to restrict or prevent fluid flow from the power circuit during valve operation. Fig. 1 indicates a power circuit from two pumps 6, 8 feeding hub motors 2, 4 on a fork-lift truck and supplying the brake system through a throttle 20 or a three-way valve. The brakes are applied by springs 27 comprising stocks of frusto-conical washers and are held off by fluid pressure in piston 26 and in lines 22. The control valve 28 initiates brake application by allowing fluid to flow to a reservoir 32, fluid flowing through the throttle 20 flowing straight to the line 30. The valve 28 is hand or pedal lever controlled, Fig. 2 (not shown), through a bellcrank and levers and is associated with a pawl detent assembly for locking pedal operating the power circuit. The brakes are band brakes, Fig. 3 each operated by a lever 58, pivoted at 60, and at 56 to the piston 26. A screw and nut mounting 72, 80 for one end of the band provides a wear adjuster; also the band undergoes a self-servo braking action for rotation in either direction. More than one power circuit may be used, fed from a common pump 6, and two sets of two hub motors 4 may be powered by respective circuits.
