Abstract

1381050 Hot gas engines UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO KB 22 Aug 1972 38970/72 Heading F1S The invention relates to a method of controlling the power output torque of a hot gas engine comprising the steps of connecting the working gas spaces of the engine to dead volume chambers 9, one only being shown, through closable channels 10 and either fully closing the channels to obtain maximum torque or opening the channels and adjusting the resistance to flow of gas through the channels in order to obtain torques less than the maximum. According to the invention the controlling sequence comprises the steps of initially opening the channels to their fullest extent and then continuously increasing the resistance to flow of the gas through the channels until the desired power output torque is achieved and ensuring that, except for fully closing the channels, it is not possible to increase the resistance to flow of gas through the channels beyond a predetermined maximum resistance, this predetermined maximum resistance being that degree of resistance which would cause the engine to operate with the maximum braking effect if the engine were running at its maximum permissible speed. The control is effected with the aid of a valve 11 which is operated by a cam which is not shown.
