Abstract

1380962 Hydrogenating unsaturated gasolines BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 1 Dec 1972 [19 Jan 1972] 2628/72 Heading C5E In a process for the selective hydrogenation of an unsaturated gasoline containing diolefins and boiling in the range 15-225‹ C. a mixture of the feedstock with a recycle stream is distilled to remove up to 5% wt. of a heavy bottoms fraction, the distillate is passed in the liquid phase in the presence of hydrogen over a partially sulphided supported nickel catalyst at 50-250‹ C. and 7-70 bars gauge, excess hydrogen is removed, the liquid effluent is distilled to separate from 2 to 50 wt. per cent as a bottoms fraction which is recycled to the first distillation and to recover a gasoline product having a diene value of less than 2. The feedstocks treated are pyrolysis gasolines and can contain 4-25 wt. per cent diolefins, 0À005-1À5 wt. per cent S and can have a diene value of 5-50 and a Bromine number of 10-100. The catalyst used suitably comprises 5-30 wt. per cent nickel on sepiolite and the major portion of the nickel is present as elemental nickel. The catalyst is made selective for the hydrogenation of diolefins in preference to monoolefin sand aromatics by partial sulphiding with thiophenic sulphur, either present in the feed, or added thereto, or by presulphiding.
