Abstract
1380451 Radar THOMSON-CSF 14 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 33201/72 Heading H4D In order to avoid distortion of the correlation function of a binary code modulated radar due to short range effects, the duration of the binary digits of the correlation reference signal are made shorter than the transmitted code and the reference signal is bipolar. In a C.W. phase modulated radar, the transmitter carrier is modulated in phase according to a pseudorandom code, Figs. 3A-3B. Clock 1, Fig. 5, drives a code generator 2 which feeds the radar transmitter 4. The code passes through a delay 5 of length T 2 , the desired range gating, to AND gate 6 and through inverter 7 to AND gate 8. The clock pulses are also fed through a delay 3 of length T 4 to the AND gates 6, 8. The outputs L, M of the two gates represent the positive and negative pulses in the reference signal. These trains are passed to gates 10, 11 where they are compared to the received signals supplied from radar receiver 9. The correlation is completed by differential amplifier 12 and processor 13 which includes Doppler filtering, detection and integration stages. This method of correlation reduces the variation in the autocorrelation function to a trapezium of amplitude T 3 /T 1 where T 3 is the clock pulse width and T 1 the clock pulse period. Over short ranges for example when used in a proximity fuse, the distortion of the autocorrelation function due to the <SP>1</SP>/d<SP>4</SP> term in the radar equation is greatly reduced (Fig. 1, not shown). Similar results obtain when using a phase modulated pulse radar (Fig. 4, not shown).
