Abstract

1380142 Mixing in conduits DOW CHEMICAL CO 9 March 1972 11102/72 Heading B1C .A static mixer for a flowing liquid, gas or particulate solid stream comprises a conduit 12 having baffle assemblies 30, 40, 41 each consisting of vertically transverse plates angled to the axis of the conduit; the baffle assemblies 30, 41 are identical and similarly oriented but they alternate with assemblies such as 40 which are mirror images of 30, 41 and also rotated about the conduit axis through a right angle. As shown in Fig. 2 the conduit is cylindrical and each baffle assembly has two plates which are hemi-elliptical. The plates preferably make an angle of 35-55‹ with the conduit axis. There may be an axial rod or a conduit (52, Fig. 4, not shown) which may be used for heat exchange; one plate of a pair may be larger than the other, see Fig. 5 (not shown); the conduit may be rectangular in cross-section, and the plates of each pair may define a small gap between them, see Fig. 6. In Fig 7 (not shown) is depicted a baffle assembly of three plates. The apparatus may be made by inserting the plates in slots in the conduit 12 and, if the apparatus is for use with gas or liquid, sealing them to the conduit wall; they may terminate at the conduit wall as shown or extend outside it to act as supports. Alternatively the plates may be assembled to the axial rod or conduit (52) in the arrangement of Fig. 4.
