Abstract
1379977 Method and apparatus for production of chloroformates ESZAKMAGYARORSZAGI VEGYIMUVEK 4 Feb 1972 5280/72 Heading C2C Chloroformates are prepared by continuously introducing into a reactor, in a concurrent flow and in an atomized state, a C 1-20 alcohol (corresponding to the desired product), and phosgene, and recovering the product. In the Fig. the vertical reactor 1 comprises a reaction zone 2, a packed column 3, a condensation zone 4, and a removal zone 5. Alcohol and phosgene are introduced through atomizer 6 to zone 2 which may be heated by coil 7 and jacket 8, while U.V. or other energy is supplied via light source 9. Column 3 with heating jacket 10 has a charge 11 of large surface area such as glass wool. Zone 4 may be cooled by means of coil 12 and jacket 13. Zone 5 includes a pulsing device 14 such as a positive displacement pump or membrane pump for reducing throughput time of reactor 1. An outlet 15 provides for removal of HCl and outlet 16 provides for removal of chloroformate end product.
