Abstract

1379327 Incinerators GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 24 Nov 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 54332/72 Headings F4W and F4B An incinerator comprises a combustion chamber within a housing, a loading door which is sealed during an operating cycle, heating means external of the combustion chamber, a primary air inlet, a blower for circulating gases within the chamber and discharging part of the gases through a fly ash separator, and a preheater to the external heating means, some of the heated gases being returned to the chamber and remainder passing through an after burner and flamebox to an exhaust blower. The incinerator may be built into a kitchen fitment, the combustion chamber having an inclined semi-cylindrical front wall 22, Fig. 2, and an inclined top wall 37 with an opening sealed by a lid 24 linked to an access door 16, having a lock linked to switches controlling the electricity supply. Air from a damper 67 passes up a duct 64 and descends through the double rear wall of the combustion chamber to an inlet 60. A blower 77 receives gases from the combustion chamber and recirculates part of them through a duct 85, and feeds part of the gases to a series of cyline separators 88 and 92, 93, 94, Fig. 3, and a preheater 96 extending the full height of the incinerator. The gases then enter the external heater chamber through an inlet 98, and are further heated by the element 44. Some of the heated gases return to the combustion chamber at an outlet 100, and the remainder are supplied to an after burner 102 together with air from a second blower 81 which is drawn in over the rotor 80 driving all the blowers and delivered to the side of semicylindrical double front wall of the combustion chamber at 107 before reaching the after burner at 109, Fig. 2. From the after burner the gases pass to a flame box 113 extending below the blowers and having a tertiary air inlet at the bottom before passing through exhaust blower 82 to the flue 118, Fig. 3. In operation, a load of refuse is fed to the combustion chamber and the access door 16, Fig. 2 latched. This allows the heater 44 and the preheater element to be energized. The primary air damper remains closed until the precombustion of the refuse causes a thermostat 68 to operate, which starts the blower motor through a thermal delay switch. A thermostat 127 operates a door lock and starts the blower motor at a considerably lower temperature than that necessary to operate thermostat 68 to open thermally actuated damper 67. An agitator 146 at the bottom of the combustion chamber, Fig. 2, is started at the same time as the blowers. An overheat thermostat 153 de-engerizes the heating elements when the combustion chamber temperature becomes excessive.
