Abstract
1379283 Separation of lactams STAMICARBON NV 5 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 21136/72 Heading C2C Lactam is separated from a strongly acid medium of sulphuric acid, or such a medium which additionally contains free sulphur trioxide, by partially neutralizing the strongly acid medium containing lactam with a recycled mother liquor containing ammonium sulphate whereby in the resulting solution the molar ratio (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 /(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 +H 2 SO 4 is between 0À4 : 1 and 0À6 : 1, extracting the lactam from the said resulting solution, decreasing the acidity of the remaining solution of ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid with gaseous ammonia, and crystallizing from the resulting solution ammonium sulphate or tri-ammonium hydrogen sulphate and separating the crystals from the solution in an amount corresponding to the amount of sulphuric acid in the initial lactam/ sulphuric acid medium, and recycling the remaining mother liquor to dilute the strongly acid medium containing lactam. The lactam may be extracted, e.g. with chloroform at temperatures of 20-40‹ C. The process is illustrated by a flow diagram, and in examples solutions of caprolactam obtained by the Beckmann rearrangement are treated.
